Minimum font sizes for print

StickerShop Team

What is the recommended smallest font size for print?

When printing small products like swing tags, bottle neck tags, and event passes, text size and font choice are critical to ensure everything remains clear and readable once printed.

Text that looks fine on screen can become difficult to read — or even break up — when printed at very small sizes.

Recommended minimum font sizes

As a general guideline for printed tags:

  • 4pt – Recommended minimum for most body text
  • 3pt – Absolute minimum for short text (use with care)
  • Below 3pt – Not recommended for print

Text smaller than 3pt is very likely to lose detail, especially on uncoated stocks or textured materials.

Font choice matters as much as size

At small sizes, thin or delicate fonts are much harder to print cleanly.

For best results:

  • Use regular or medium-weight fonts
  • Avoid thin, light, or hairline fonts
  • Avoid very decorative or handwritten fonts at small sizes

Sans-serif fonts generally print more clearly at small sizes than highly detailed serif fonts.

Stroke thickness and fine detail

Even if the font size is acceptable, extremely thin strokes can cause problems.

Common issues include:

  • Letters filling in
  • Breaks in thin lines
  • Reduced legibility on darker backgrounds

If your text looks very light or fragile on screen, it’s likely too fine for small-scale print.

Background and colour contrast

Small text should always have strong contrast with the background.

Best practice:

  • Dark text on a light background
  • Avoid light colours on dark backgrounds for small text
  • Avoid placing small text over patterns or textures

Low contrast makes small text significantly harder to read once printed.

What we recommend

To avoid issues:

  • Use 4pt or larger wherever possible
  • Keep text simple and clear
  • Avoid thin fonts at small sizes
  • Use strong colour contrast

If you’re unsure whether your text is suitable, don’t worry — our team will always check your artwork before printing and let you know if any text may be too small.

Quick summary

  • 4pt is the safest minimum font size for print
  • 3pt can work for short text but should be used carefully
  • Thin fonts and fine strokes don’t print well at small sizes
  • High contrast improves readability

If you need help adjusting your artwork, we’re always happy to advise before printing.
